Little Raven shows similarities in the themes explored by Edgar Allen Poe in his poem, ‘The Raven’, written in 1845.

Both Little Raven by Bridget Uppill and The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe create a sense of human personification of the raven as well as portraying the raven as an ominous presence.
Task:
Part 1- Have your students read through Little Raven and discuss as a class the themes of the book.
Prompting questions:
Part 2- have the students read through Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven”.

- What do you think the word nesciently means?
- Is there a moral to this story? What is the author trying to tell the reader?
- Who is the person in this story? Is it the author or is it yourself?
- How has the author personified the raven in this text?
Part 2- have the students read through Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven”.

1) Developing a compare and contrast essay of the two texts.

3) Developing illustrations for Poe’s The Raven in a similar way to Little Raven’s style.
4) Change the setting of The Raven to be in the bush/forest.
